“During the worst of my childhood abuse, I had constant thoughts of suicide but I would never have raised my hand and asked for such a book,” says Simpson.
Thirty years later, out of passion and necessity, Simpson is one of the nation’s leading child advocates on runaway, suicide and abuse prevention. He’s written four young adult fiction novels, Who Am I?, The World is Wrong, Child’s Island and Runaway, which all include The Teenage and Young Adult Survival Handbook. The handbook is a small guide that covers most of the topics plaguing young people today—suicide, bullying, sexual abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, self-worth, being the child of an addict, living in a dysfunctional home, surviving school and more.
Simpson wrote the novels from his personal experience growing up with these issues. The reader will realize instantly that they’re not alone with their problems. The four novels range from action/drama, adventure and science fiction woven through compelling dialogue from the first page to the last. Each book has a cool, young romance and lots of humor that teenagers and young adults will relate to. The characters were created to deal with many of the problems children face today, yet the fictional aspect provides excitement and escape. Meanwhile, The Teenage and Young Adult Survival Handbook is camouflaged within. It makes it easier for a child to request the book and for a professional or concerned adult or peer to try to give it to a distressed young person without putting them on the spot or having resistance.
