Lunda Wells is in his third season on the Giants’ coaching staff and his second as the team’s assistant offensive line coach. Wells works closely with Pat Flaherty, who has been the offensive line coach since 2004.
In 2011, Wells held the title of offensive assistant coach.
Last season, Flaherty and Wells had to constantly restructure the line because of injuries. The Giants used seven different starting offensive line combinations, the second-highest total in the NFL; Oakland used eight.
One constant was Justin Pugh, the team’s 2013 first round draft choice, who started all 16 games at right tackle. Pugh was a) the first Giants rookie to start an entire 16-game season since defensive tackle Barry Cofield in 2006; b) the first offensive lineman to do it since David Diehl 10 years ago; and c) the first Giants’ first round draft choice to do so since Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor in 1981.
Pugh was just the fourth Giants first-round draft choice to start every game in their rookie season since the 1970 merger. The others were linebacker Jim Files (1970), guard John Hicks (1974) and Taylor (1981).
In 2012, the offensive line allowed an NFL-low 20 sacks and helped the Giants score 429 points, the second-highest total in franchise history.
Before joining the Giants’ staff, Wells spent four seasons at Louisiana State University. In 2008-09, he was an offensive line assistant. In addition to his practice and game day duties working with the offensive line, Wells’ administrative responsibilities included self-scouting, breaking down tape of opponents and developing scouting reports.
In his final two years at LSU, Wells was an assistant to the head coach and an assistant to special teams coach Thomas McGaughey, who was a member of the Giants’ coaching staff from 2007-10. Wells worked with LSU head coach Les Miles on game day responsibilities, practice preparation, administrative tasks and recruiting duties, and with McGaughey on self-scouting, breaking down tape of opponents, assisting with the game plan and scouting reports.
In 2010, Wells was an offensive line intern in the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp, where he worked alongside coach Hudson Houck.
Wells was the offensive line coach, run game coordinator and head strength and conditioning coach at Scotlandville High School in Baton Rouge, La. in 2006-07. He coached the offensive line and devised the offensive run game plans.
An offensive lineman, Wells played in the Arena Football League for the Grand Rapids Rampage, South Georgia Rampage and Louisiana Swashbucklers.
Wells was a four-year starter at guard at Southern University (2002-05). In 2002 and 2005, he was voted to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference first team. Southern won the 2003 SWAC championship. Wells blocked for two quarterbacks who were named SWAC Player of the Year. In addition to his conference title ring, Wells earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and, in 2007, a master’s degree in criminal justice at Southern.
Wells is a native of Baker, La., just outside Baton Rouge. He was a Class 5A first-team all-state offensive line selection at Baker High School. Wells was recruited by powerhouses like Alabama and Nebraska.
Wells is married to Tiffany. They have a daughter, Adanya Neema.
