David “DeWayne” Barker The Founder of The ROMEO Preparatory Academy for Boys is Today’s Honoree

DavidDewayneBarkerI am David “DeWayne” Barker, born and raised in Paris, TX (near Dallas). I attended Wiley College in Marshall, TX where I received a Bachelor’s degree in English. I also hold a Master’s of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Sam Houston State University. I am currently finishing up a Master of Science in Education degree in Educational Administration from University of the Southwest in Hobbs, NM, which I will receive in May 2015. I will begin my doctorate degree in the fall at Grambling State University, pursuing an Ed. D in Developmental Education with a specialization in Curriculum and Instructional Design. I hold memberships in National Alliance of Black School Educators, Texas Teachers, National Education Association, and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

I have been in the field of education for twelve years. During those twelve years I have taught all levels of high school English, fourth grade Reading and Social Studies, 6th Grade self-contained, coached varsity boys’ basketball, and served as a principal of a charter school. After experiencing burnt out with the public education system in Texas, God blessed me to open my own school. I serve as Founder/CEO of The ROMEO Preparatory Academy for Boys and coach the basketball team. ROMEO (Responsible-Outstanding-Men-Empowering Others) serves disadvantaged and underserved Black males in grades 9-12 and is in its second year of existence.

My educational philosophy is very simple. I believe that all children are gifted and can learn but it takes the right person standing before them and someone who can relate to them and has a genuine interest in them inside and outside of school and their future. I take educating young minds extremely important and incorporate these two quotes in everything I do. “The only justification for looking down on someone is to lift them up.” And, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’
