Attorney Julia Sylva is Today’s Honoree

JuliaSylvaJulia Sylva is an Attorney and first Latina mayor in the U.S. Julia, 58, is the owner of the Law Offices of Julia Sylva, founded in Los Angeles in 2000. She is a great role model in the Hispanic community as the first Latina mayor in the U.S. (Hawaiian Gardens, Ca; 1978 to 1980), and for her years of hard work to realize her dreams and give back to the community.

Julia, who is fluent in Spanish, was the first in her family to attend college. She worked hard to become a business and corporate lawyer, also handling real estate, land use and planning, estate planning, trust and wills. Julia worked at a large law firm, but there was not much opportunity for advancement and executive positions because they were managed and controlled mostly by men who sought to promote their sons.

She became involved in the community and helping others as former mayor and member of the city council for the city of Hawaiian Gardens, California. She is a founding member of the Mexican American Bar Association, Political Action Committee; the Latina Lawyers Political Action Committee, and the National Women’s Political Caucus, Los Angeles Metro Chapter, Political Action Committee—she believes in political empowerment, especially for women and minorities.

She suggests that young people find mentors and associate with positive people who will encourage and assist them. There are many people in the country, like Sylva, who like to help others help themselves. She serves as a pro bono General Counsel to the National Latina Business Women Association and she highly recommends that others volunteer in organizations with a positive mission.
