Cristen Sawyer is the Christmas Program Director at The Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers in Waterville, Maine. Her responsibility is to lead a year-round program that provides new toys and clothing to 1,600 disadvantaged children in Maine.
Imagine the pressure of providing Christmas presents under the tree for your children, now times that pressure by 1,600.
This is the goal each year for Cristen Sawyer, Director of the Christmas Program at The Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers in Waterville. The year-round efforts of the program are culminating over the next two weeks as Cristen and her team of over 200 volunteers match interests and toys and clothing for the 1,600 disadvantaged children and their parents that have applied for the program.
The Christmas Program at The Maine Children’s Home distributes boxes of gifts and clothing to approximately 1,600 financially disadvantaged children throughout the state. It is the only program of its kind that provides new toys, books, games and new, warm clothing to boys and girls throughout Maine.
This year, has been very difficult for donations due to the economy and even Hurricane Sandy has impacted the programs resources. Among the far too many empty boxes, Cristen works several 10 and 12 hours days this time of year to shop, pack and coordinate the details, volunteers and administrative duties to make sure every child and parent that has applied for assistance with Christmas will have presents under the tree on Christmas morning.
Cristen’s hard work and dedication to the children of Maine is incredible. She has worked as the Director of the Christmas Program for 9 years and is a valuable asset to entire community.
