JANICE P. BROWN, Founder and Partner at Brown Law Group, has demonstrated the kind of entrepreneurial spirit that has set trends, blazed trails for other women, and left an indelible mark on the legal profession.
Her seven-lawyer law firm is extraordinary by any measurement, but it is the world-class professionalism that makes Brown Law Group competitive with the largest international firms. Janice is a highly respected and successful trial attorney, earning her reputation at the Department of Justice as Trial Attorney of the Year. Janice has created and continues to foster relationships with such companies as Walmart, Sempra, Wells Fargo, Barratt American, Manpower, Chubb Insurance, and Liberty Mutual. Through Janice’s skilled representation, these companies have become institutional clients of Brown Law Group. The firm’s client base has steadily grown as a result of recommendations made by her clients to in–house counsel in other companies.
At Brown Law Group, each member of the firm is encouraged to grow professionally and is expected to, and does, represent clients with the highest level of competence and integrity. To accomplish this, Janice requires her attorneys to participate in a vision-setting retreat. Janice’s team establishes professional and personal objectives for development both as attorneys and as individuals. This unique practice, combined with the solid financial health of the firm, has allowed Brown Law Group to grow to include a partner, three associate attorneys, a full time office manager, and two paralegals.
In 2006, Brown Law Group was encouraged by Sempra, a long standing client, to become certified as a woman/minority-owned business entity by the Public Utilities Commission – State of California Utility Supplier Diversity Program and certified as a minority-owned business entity by the Greater San Diego Business Development Council and the National Minority Supplier Development Council. This accomplishment is rare, as Brown Law Group is on a short list of law firms that are able to meet the stringent standards of these qualifying agencies and is indeed one of the only law firm in San Diego County to hold this designation.
Janice community and professional achievements has earned her significant recognition. She was named by Gonzaga University Alumni Association as a 2010 recipient of its highest honor, the Distinguished Alumni Merit Award. The award recognizes service and contributions to family, careers, peers and community. Also in 2010, the San Diego Regional EDC named attorney to its Board of Directors.
In 2006, the Mayor of San Diego, Jerry Sanders, appointed Janice to serve on the Centre City Development Corporation (CCDC) Board of Directors. CCDC is the public, non-profit corporation created by the City of San Diego to staff and implement downtown redevelopment projects and programs.
Janice also has a deep commitment to her African-American community and is a lifetime member of the NAACP. Janice is also the past-president of the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association, the African-American bar association of San Diego County. Her commitment to women of color is exemplary, as she is the Chair of the Training Committee for the EBGBA, which seeks to train a new generation of African-American attorneys and law students. She also mentors young women of color and is a former Board Member of the Girl Scouts of San Diego.
Janice has opened up numerous doors for women in order to diversify the profession. She serves on the San Diego Judicial Evaluation Committee, wherein she supports and encourages women to apply for judicial positions. She also serves on the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) Leadership Outreach committee, encouraging women to run for leadership positions in the SDCBA.
Janice is a leader on a national level as well. She serves in the House of Delegates for the ABA from San Diego and is a member of the ABA Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Council. Janice has been a firm supporter of TIPS’ Leadership Academy as a Steering Committee member, which seeks to diversify the leadership ranks of TIPS and the ABA by funding and providing training programs for young attorneys from around the country.
Last year Brown Law Group was named the Minority Business Enterprise Supplier of the Year (Class II – firm size between $1 million to $10 million) by the San Diego Regional Minority Supplier Development Council.
