Alana Nicole Sholar was born as Alan Sholar in 1961. One of three brothers, Alan was part of a close-knit, church-going family who lived and worked on several now-famous horse farms in the Bluegrass region of central Kentucky.
After years of lonely struggle with gender confusion and self-acceptance, Sholar legally changed his name from Alan to Alana Nicole in 2005, an important step in a lifelong journey of gender discovery–a journey that is documented in the engaging memoir, Hung in the Middle.
Hung in the Middle: A Journey of Gender Discovery is Alana Nicole Sholar’s fascinating, heart-wrenching life story–a story full of real-life lessons of gender diversity in 20th century rural America, and a story about searching for, and finding, true love.
