Farooq Busari is a 2009 Ohio Wesleyan graduate who has launched the Shakepoverty Foundation, an international organization dedicated to alleviating extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. “Poverty can be ended, not by a handful of people, but with millions of handshakes,” Busari says. With assistance from the University, he launched Shakepoverty OWU, the foundation’s first college chapter, in April 2010 with the unveiling of a large mural of photographs showing Busari shaking hands with nearly every member of the campus community.
The mission of Shakepoverty is to shake poverty from the world by supporting the Millennium Promise and its flagship initiative, the Millennium Village Project.
This unique and innovative grassroots movement inspires people by showing them that their handshake commitment and purchase of Shakepoverty merchandise is important in their goal to end poverty.
