Gretchen Curry, a senior at Ohio Wesleyan University from West Hartford, Conn. Curry helped to launch the HaitiOWU Initiative to help the Haitian people recover from their country’s devastating earthquakes.
Her work has resulted in a permanent OWU community service program and exemplifies the caring and compassion of OWU students to help others locally, nationally, and internationally. In May 2011, Curry was recognized as a Newman Civic Fellow. These national awards recognize inspiring college student leaders who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country.
Curry is constantly and deeply committed to organizing activities concerning social justice issues, including educating others about genocide and fund raising to help Africa’s impoverished. She also has served as a co-student coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center and has been praised for her work tutoring inner-city children.
Ohio Wesleyan President Rock Jones, Ph.D., said Curry’s dedication to service and strong leadership skills are well-known on campus. “Gretchen is committed to making a difference in the world, and she does so every day,” Jones said. See video about the HaitiOWU Initiative at
